Blagoevgrad reveals its character best when explored on foot. We’ve put together walking routes that lead you to our favourite corners of the city — quiet alleys, lively squares, forest paths, and unexpected viewpoints. Let these walks show you the true atmosphere of Blagoevgrad.
Distance: approx. 4 km
Walking time: 3–4 hours
Difficulty: Easy, mostly flat city walk
Discover Blagoevgrad at your own pace with this easy self-guided walking tour. You will stroll through some of the city’s most characteristic places — quiet streets, lively squares, green parks, and favourite spots loved by locals. This walk is perfect for getting a first impression of Blagoevgrad’s atmosphere and everyday life while seeing several highlights along the way.
The starting point of this classic walking tour is Arena Park, a small green strip along the Bistrica River with a mini bike park, skate park and playgrounds. Across the river you can see the American University campus.
Walking upstream along the river, you reach the end of the park at James Boucher Street and the bridge over the Bistrica.
Cross the bridge diagonally and you will arrive at the Municipal Market — the largest market in the region. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday, and regardless of the season, the market is always colourful and lively. Here you may see live animals for sale such as chickens and turkeys, and you will always find a wide variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables, herbs, nuts, cheese and eggs.
The outer part of the market won the Building of the Year 2023 award. On market days, the covered areas are available to local farmers who come from the surrounding villages (and sometimes from farther away) to sell their fresh produce here.
A pedestrian bridge connects the open and closed market sections. Cross it, and if you need a quick break, stop at PolCa – a popular place among students for coffee, sandwiches or hot soup.
Prefer a longer meal? Continue downstream on the right-hand side and you will reach the newly opened Italian restaurant RB Kitchen.
Crossing the pedestrian bridge again toward the market, your path continues past the City Art Gallery (note that the entrance is slightly hidden from the street). You can make a short stop here; current exhibitions are listed in our Events Calendar.
A few meters further is Courthouse Square (often referred to as “the square in front of Billa”). This is where the Main Street begins.
Instead of taking Main Street, head northwest past the green areas into the City Garden, leading to the architectural gem of communist-era
Blagoevgrad:
G. Izmirliev Square – also known as Theater Square or Makedoncheto.
The large architectural complex was built for a diplomatic visit in the late 1980s. It includes:
the former Party House (now hosting parts of AUBG and Southwestern University)
the Regional Library
the Peyo Yavorov Concert Hall
the Drama Theater
the Municipality
the Regional Administration
the Post Office
You can find updated event information in the Events Calendar.
Continue along the pedestrian street as it curves to the right. You will reach Mall Largo, whose top floor offers a nice view of the surroundings.
Following several parallel streets to the north, you arrive at Macedonia Square, also known as Opera Square.
At one end is the beautiful Bridge of Lovers, and at the other a small green park and
the City Mineral Bath.
Today, most of the bath building is a hotel with a spa centre. Another section houses the City Bath and Rehabilitation Centre.
You are now in the heart of Blagoevgrad. If you are hungry or need a rest, the area offers numerous restaurants and cafés.
Cross the Bridge of Lovers to reach:
the Regional History Museum, and
the entrance to the Old Town of Varosha.
Varosha consists of only a few narrow streets and Revival-style houses from the 19th century, but the cobblestones and scent of old wood create a strong historical atmosphere. Visit the Church of the Presentation of the Virgin, and take a look at the “Wheel of Life” located outside to the left of the entrance.
If you want to see Blagoevgrad from above, climb the stairs next to the Regional History Museum.
You will reach the Loven dom Park – green, cool, and offering wonderful views of the city. At
the northern end of Varosha (Zora Street), you can enjoy something sweet at Yoana Pastry
Shop.
Cross the bridge (Hristo Silyanov Street) and walk upstream along the river. This is the Alley of Health, starting at a small square with a fountain. You will pass several restaurants where you can rest or have a meal. Depending on your energy and the weather, you can continue all the way to Bachinovo Park. On hot days, bring a swimsuit — a dip in the cold Rila waters of the Bistrica River is unforgettable.
Return to the beginning of the Alley of Health. Instead of crossing the bridge, go north up the stairs above the fountain onto Dimitar Yosifov
Street, then turn left into Danail Krapchev Street. Cross the playground and Sava Mihailov Street; Danail Krapchev Street continues,
and soon you will see the top of the Clock Tower — one of the city's oldest buildings and most notable landmarks. Turn slightly left onto
Kostur Street, then climb the stairs on your right.
In the courtyard of the Clock Tower you will find Chasovnik Restaurant, offering a beautiful view while you enjoy food or drinks.
If you want to experience Blagoevgrad’s mineral water, go back down the stairs. A few meters down the small square, left of the green van, follow the next stairs up. A narrow section of Kostur Street leads to the only free-access mineral water point in the city centre. The water is hot and not drinkable due to high fluoride content.
A little higher is the stadium, from where another nice view of the city opens up.
Walking back to the centre (e.g., via Sergey Rumyantsev Street), you will pass:
the central mosque
St. Ivan Rilski Street
… and soon you’ll be back at Opera Square.
Walk down past Mall Largo along Todor Aleksandrov Main Street, and you will reach Courthouse Square — one of the starting points of this walking tour.
